Forthcoming in November 2011. For more information, visit Gorecki in Context.

Space and Spatialization in Contemporary Music - Dissertation available in free PDF format

Completed in October 1994 and not available in print until now, this groundbreaking dissertation by Maria Anna Harley presents the history of space in the musical thought of the 20th-century and outlines the development of spatialization in the theory and practice of contemporary music (after 1950). Based on original interviews, the dissertation presents a theory of the use of space for structural and symbolic purposes and focuses on three distinct approaches to spatialization: Brant's simultaneity of sound layers, Xenakis's movement of sound, and Schafer's music of ritual and soundscape.450 pp., Free PDF download

Interview with Maja Trochimczyk on Poet's Cafe, KPFK 90.7 FM

On March 30, 2011, KPFK radio 90.7 FM broadcast an interview with Maja Trochimczyk by host Lois P. Jones.  The interview, recorded in October 2010, focused on the anthology Chopin with Cherries and Maja's dramatic journey from Poland and the world of Polish language to living in California and writing poetry in English.  Highlights included "A Study with Cherries" published in Chopin with Cherries, "An Ode of the Lost" that appeared in The Cosmopolitan Review, and "The Music Box" from Rose Always, read - appropriately - with a music box discussed in the poem. The interview is on the website of Tim Green, in the Poet's Cafe archives.

About reading poems from "Chopin with Cherries"

"When good poems are read by their own poets, somewhere after the third poem a magical quality begins to evolve and the poems become incidents in a story. One could live the life of Chopin in the ninety minutes of the afternoon and get a glimpse into 22 other lives. The live poetry reading is an Art Form rising out of the poems and the poets as a new phenomenon. It is a concert of minds and emotions and news from each being--an adventure in being."
~ Russell Salamon, Los Angeles (September 2010)

About "Rose Always - A Court Love Story"

"I'm enormously impressed by what Maja Trochimczyk has achieved. I note that she has been working for over 11 years on this very complex work, with its many layers of meaning and allusion. Her facility in writing about the innumerable nuances of love (naturally enough from a very feminine viewpoint) is simply breathtaking. Reading Rose Always is an exhilarating experience, even if I am sure that I have not always understood all of its subtleties."
~ Tom Berman, Israel (scientist and poet, author of Shards and Rambles)
